Leilani Ward’s sketchbook was designed to reflect her deep connection to nature. Originally from Colorado and now living in Bozeman, Montana, her surroundings deeply influence her work as an abstract painter and florist. From the start, I knew color would play a significant part in Leilani’s sketchbook as her favorite color is Payne’s Grey- a blue-toned grey that gets cooler as it gets lighter. I found a paper that captured this tone and used it to design the interior spreads accordingly. Next, I created a pattern inspired by Ginkgo leaves and the circles in nature. Ginkgo leaves start with a thin stem and spread out into an organic fan shape. I simplified this shape to use in a pattern consisting of circles, Ginkgo leaf shapes, and curved four-point stars, with each page in the sketchbook being curved to match this shape language. Then, the pattern was hand embroidered onto cream book cloth with a similar blue sewing string, to associate with gentleness and the fine veins in leaves. Three out of four of the sketchbooks have a pocket at the end for collecting and holding anything the individuals want.
